A reading room in a noisy world
Welcome to the Library.
There is no algorithm here, no feed, no hurry. There are only shelves, and on them, things worth reading slowly: essays, stories, reflections, each one written to be sat with rather than skimmed.
So take your time. Pull something down. Find a chair.
Some rooms are built to speed you up.
This one is built to slow you down.
A word from the Guide
Why these were written
For seventeen years as an ADF Welfare Officer, I sat with people on their hardest days. These letters hold what I learned in those rooms, and what I am still learning: about grief and fear, about love and gratitude, about the storms that reveal who we are.
Each one takes an idea the old philosophers carved into their lives and walks it into an ordinary day. No noise. No hurry. One letter at a time.
Marcus J Emsley, The Guide
Every storm I sat beside taught me the same thing. The people in front of me were never broken. They were being revealed.
That is why I write.
