About Arete Estate

Arete

(ah-reh-TAY)

An ancient Greek word for excellence: not something you add to a life, but the best of it, already there, waiting to be revealed.

Philosophy

Excellence revealed by storms.

Michelangelo said the figure was already in the marble. His work was only to take away what was not David. We believe the same is true of every person: you are not a problem to be fixed, but a figure waiting in the stone.

The storms of a life, the grief, the fear, the long hard seasons, are not the enemy of that excellence. Met well, they are the chisel.

Mission

Six virtues, walked one at a time.

Arete Estate is a home for character formation in the Barossa Valley. Through coaching, writing, speaking and a school curriculum, we walk people, families and classrooms through six timeless virtues: Fortitude, Wisdom, Love, Courage, Temperance and Gratitude.

Not a programme to finish. A way to walk.

Six timeless virtues

Six windows. One house.

Each virtue has its own room at the Estate, its own colour, and its own question to ask of your life.

I

Fortitude

Stand firm and shine, even when the storm is inside you.

II

Wisdom

Acknowledge the mud. Record the gold. Choose what you carry forward.

III

Love

You don't fall in love. You choose it. The fall is choosing it again tomorrow.

IV

Courage

Fear tells you the stakes. Courage says ‘noted’, and begins anyway.

V

Temperance

Conduct your life with balance: all things in harmony.

VI

Gratitude

Planting what you won't harvest, and tending what you didn't plant.

Meet the Guide

Marcus J Emsley

I am Marcus, and they call me The Guide: not because I stand above anyone, but because I have walked the road long enough to point at the markers.

For seventeen years I served as an ADF Welfare Officer, walking into the hardest rooms on the hardest days, and staying: grief, trauma, and the long work of welfare support. Those years taught me two things I have never been able to un-know: no one is spared the storm, and the storm does not get the last word.

“Character is not built in calm seas; it is revealed in rough ones.”

Arete Estate is what I built with that second lesson. I write the words, hold the framework and ask the questions most people never get asked. I am the author of Wisdom & Wine, and I live in the Barossa Valley, walking beside those ready to be revealed.
