The Arete Method

You are marble, not a project.

Across a year, six virtues are revealed through storms, one honest chisel stroke at a time.

See the four pathsHow the method works

ὑπόσχεσις

hyposchesis · the promise

The promise

We do not build a better you. We help reveal the one already in the stone, and we make that change visible to the people who live beside you.

That is the whole method. Five parts, six virtues, one year, walked at the pace of a real life. Nothing is added to you. What is not you is slowly, honestly cut away.

The method in five parts

From rough stone to a figure others can see

Part I

λίθος

lithos · the stone

The Marble

Where you stand, honestly seen.

Every walk begins where you actually stand, not where you wish you stood. Before we sit down, you answer a few honest questions in Before We Sit Down, take a simple steadiness score, and describe an ordinary Tuesday a year from now: who is at the table, how you speak to them, how you sleep. Nothing is judged. The stone is simply seen, so we both know what is there to work with.

Part II

ἀρεταί

aretai · the virtues

The Six Rooms

Across the year you walk through six rooms, one virtue at a time, in the order the storms tend to teach them. Each room has its symbol and one locked teaching: a sentence short enough to carry into the hardest hour of your week.

Room I

The Lighthouse, engraved

ἀνδρεία

Fortitude

The Lighthouse

“Stand firm and shine, even when the storm is inside you.”

Room II

The Gold Pan & Journal, engraved

σοφία

Wisdom

The Gold Pan & Journal

“Acknowledge the mud. Record the gold. Choose what you carry forward.”

Room III

The Lavender & Book, engraved

ἀγάπη

Love

The Lavender & Book

“You don’t fall in love. You choose it. The fall is choosing it again tomorrow.”

Room IV

The Windmill, engraved

θάρσος

Courage

The Windmill

“Fear tells you the stakes. Courage says ‘noted’, and begins anyway.”

Room V

The Conductor, engraved

σωφροσύνη

Temperance

The Conductor

“Conduct your life with balance, all things in harmony.”

Room VI

The Garden, engraved

χάρις

Gratitude

The Garden

“Planting what you won’t harvest, and tending what you didn’t plant.”

Part III

κόλαψις

kolapsis · the stroke

The Chisel Stroke

One honest act, named at the end of every Hour.

Every Hour ends the same way. We name one chisel stroke: one honest, specific, doable act for the days ahead. Not a resolution. Not a programme. One stroke, small enough to do on a hard day and true enough to matter. Marble is not shaped by force. It is shaped by faithful strokes, repeated, until the figure begins to show.

Part IV

ἄσκησις

askēsis · practice

The Three Practices

Between the Hours, three practices keep the chisel moving: one for every day, one for every second week, one for every season.

Daily

Pan for Gold

At the end of each day, swirl it in the pan. Acknowledge the mud, record the gold, and choose what you carry into tomorrow. A few minutes, every day.

Fortnightly

The Garden Within

Every second week, walk the beds of your inner life: what is growing, what needs pulling, what needs tending, and what you planted that you may never see bloom.

Quarterly

The Mansion of the Mind

Once a season, walk the rooms of the house you are becoming: the doors you have opened, the rooms you have kept, and the one you are ready to open next.

Part V

ἀποκάλυψις

apokalypsis · the unveiling

The Reveal

What you, and the people beside you, can now see.

At the end of the year there is no finish line, only a figure in the stone that others can see. We measure that change with the Arete Reading, taken three times. You complete it yourself and, with your consent, so do two or three people who live close to you. The truest sign that something has changed is when the people beside you notice before you say a word.

ἐπιμέλεια

epimeleia · care

The limits and the care

This is character formation, not therapy. The Arete Method does not diagnose, treat or replace clinical care, and I will never pretend it does.

Everything rests on consent. Nothing is asked of you that you have not agreed to, and anyone you invite into the Arete Reading takes part only with their consent, and yours.

“If what you are carrying needs more than a guide, I will help you find the right door.”

If you need someone right now

Reaching out is not weakness. It is all six virtues at once.
